Must Don't Whip 'Um (Part II of The Accidental Trilogy: a prequel/sequel to Accidental Nostalgia) premiered in January 2007 at the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN) and at St. Ann's Warehouse (Brooklyn, NY). These opening performances received rave reviews in publications including Variety, The New York Times, and Time Out. Must Don't Whip 'Um has also been performed at the Wexner Center (April 2007 in Columbus, Ohio) On the Boards (May 2007 in Seattle, Washington); the Philadelphia Live Art Festival (September 2007); REDCAT (September 2007 in Los Angeles, California); and the Carolina Performing Arts Festival (November 2007).

Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg were honored with a 2007 Bessie Award for their design of Must Don't Whip 'Um.

Must Don't Whip 'Um was developed through residencies provided by Yaddo; the Swarthmore Project in Theater (Swarthmore, PA); The Field (New York, NY); Chashama (New York, NY); MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA); the Stable (courtesy of Two Trees Management); the Walker Art Center; and St. Ann's Warehouse. Must Don't Whip 'Um was produced by St. Ann's Warehouse in collaboration with Accinosco and co-commissioners including the Walker Art Center, the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, and On the Boards; and was funded in part through grants from the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation, the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation, NYSCA, the Jerome Foundation, the Greenwall Foundation, the New York State Music Fund, and APAP Ensemble Theatre Collaborations Grant (a component of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Theatre Initiative). Works-in-progress performances were presented by St. Ann's Warehouse (December 2005); the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival (September 2006); PICA (September 2006 in Portland, OR); and the Prelude Festival (September 2005 and 2006 in NYC).

Must Don't Whip 'Um was written and composed by Cynthia Hopkins, and created in collaboration with: co-designers Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg (winners of a 2007 Bessie Award for their design work on the show); singer Susan Oetgen, lighting designer Jason Boyd; sound designer Jim Dawson; choreographers Diane Madden, Annie B Parson, and Jordana Che Toback; directors DJ Mendel and Brooke O'Harra; costume designer Tara Webb; production coordinator Aiyana D'Arcangelo; performers Steve Ciuffo, Mary Fern, Aleta Claire Findlay, John Hopkins, Tom Hopkins, Margot Kingon, Jony Perez, Scott Shepherd, James Sugg, Gary Wilmes, and Maria Ventura; musicians Curtis Hasselbring, Ben Holmes, and Reut Regev; and the band Gloria Deluxe (Kristin Mueller, Josh Stark, Philippa Thompson, and Karen Waltuch).
